Joseph Sarto was born in 1835, at Riese in the province of Venice. He became Patriarch of Venice in 1893, and pope in 1903.
The aim of his life was to "restore all things in Christ". He defended the deposit of faith, exhorted the people to take part in the liturgy, and encouraged frequent communion. His motivation was always pastoral.
He passed away in 1914.
